Hello f(r)iends!
Yesterday I was in Norwich (UK) and discovered a tea shop I'd never heard of, tucked away in the mall. It was full of many many teas...and coffees too! The man who works there even makes fresh coffee ready to drink...I'll be back for one of them! I was in the shop for aaages pondering around at all the tea. I also found the yogi tea brand I was after, unfortunately the particular one I wanted wasn't there but its nice to know that they sell Yogi there =) Loose tea...organic tea...teabags..teapots...coffee beans... I was like a kid in a sweetshop. There were little drawers to smell the teas and it was so old fashioned and apothecary-like! I'm so happy to have found it :D
I bought nettle tea, and some chinese white tea for my mum. The assistant reccomended it to me as I asked for something that aids sleep. Anyone know anymore about it, what else its good for etc.?

Re: Tea Shop Travels :)
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 11:11 AMAs far as aI know Nettle is good for allergies if it's fresh enough but I have heard little else. For sleeping I think plain old Chamomile or some Passion Flower and Valerian do better. :)

Mon, February 18, 2008 - 11:44 AMStinging nettle tea is good for the skin. My "Folk Remedies That Work" book says 3-4 cups a day helps with acne. Steep one tsp for 10 min.
In my "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" book, nettle acts as a diuretic, expectorant, pain reliever, and tonic. Good for benign prostatic hyperplasia, anemia, arthritis, rheumatism, hay fever, and other allergic disorders, kidney problems, and malabsorption syndrome. Improves goiter, inflammatory conditions, and mucous conditions of the lungs. Used in hair care products, helps stimulate hair follicles and regulate scalp oil buildup.
According to my "A Consumer's Guide to Medicines in Food", primrose, kavakava, chamomile, lady's slipper, lettuce extract, wild lettuce, passionflower, poppy, valerian and ginseng are supposed to help with insomnia. I'd look into other herbals and how they're prepared, if you're interested.
In my "Handbook of Alternatives to Chemical Medicine" it says for chronic sleeplessness, chop 1 clove garlic and place in a glass with just enough water to cover. Place a lid on the glass and allow the mixture to stand all day. Just before bedtime fill the glass with water, as warm as you can drink and sip slowly. Repeat daily for 10 days to 2 wks.
The same book also says that strawberry leaf or carob leaf tea is relaxing. :}
I could go on. I love going through my alternative healing books! :D Hope that helps!

Re: Tea Shop Travels :)
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 8:34 AMWas it the white tea or the nettle that was meant to aid sleep? The white tea I am familiar with (bai mu dan) is very low in caffeine, so I often drink it at night. I have read that it is "an excellent tea for purifying mind and body" as well. -

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 10:18 AMI wouldn't recommend white tea for sleeping if you are sensitive to caffeine, for me even that would keep me awake at night, although for some they could probably rest on it no prob. -

Re: Tea Shop Travels :)
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 2:33 AMIf you brew the white tea with cool enough water -- the same holds for yellow teas -- and steep it very lightly, and don't drink too much, you should still be able to keep your sleep :zzz
